The first National survey of its kind, More Than a Bed: A National Profile of Violence Against Women (VAW) Shelters and Transition Houses details the breadth and depth of work being done by VAW shelters across the country. The resounding message is that shelters and transition houses are doing more with less: The data clearly show that they are providing expanded services for a diverse group of women and children, without comparable funding increases.
We worked with Women's Shelters Canada to design a set of highly visual, digital, bilingual resources as a engaging entry point to this data. We also designed the companion resource Transitioning to a Life Free from Violence that details the operations of second stage shelters as they provide long-term and transitional supports to survivors of domestic and intimate partner violence.
The voices of survey respondents are centred throughout both sets of reports, narrating the strengths and struggles of an essential sector.
