The North American Cultural Diplomacy Initiative (NACDI) is a multidisciplinary research network connecting academics, policymakers and practitioners in the broad field of cultural diplomacy, from North America and beyond.

The Need

We were approached by NACDI to engage in a rebranding and website redesign process. Our goals were to:

  • create an engaging multilingual logo design which reflects NACDI’s role as a connector and intellectual hub; and
  • restructure the existing website design to more clearly share the projects, events, publications, and biographies of their members.

The Idea

Intersections & Emergence

In its primary role as a connector, and intellectual hub, NACDI brings together a diverse range of knowledge-producers; this includes academics, cultural producers, diplomats, policy makers, activists and cultural consumers. Through its work, NACDI asks, “Where do these worlds intersect?” And, “How can these intersections shape and transform our understanding(s) and application(s) of ‘cultural diplomacy’?”

Through the advancement of new scholarship and research, NACDI challenges the ‘hard edges’—of disciplines, sectors, and borders. Through iterative inquiry, dialogue and cross-pollination, clearer frameworks, understandings, and possibilities emerge.

The Work

In this approach, we focus on NACDI as a site of connection and intersection. The logo is made up of overlapping rings, in a variety of colours, which are positioned irregularly to create a sense of motion. The rings can be read as referencing the various practitioners, communities, and cultures engaged in the network, and the radical potential of what emerges from these collaborations.

The final work includes the redesigned multi-lingual logo suite and website
